What are the benefits of having a custom wedding gown made?
Having a custom wedding gown made can be an incredibly fun and rewarding process. If you have a vision for something original and creative, the sky is the limit! Also, unlike purchasing a generic pre-made gown, it will be tailored to fit and flatter your body. Most importantly, a custom gown is designed to be an expression of who you are and make your true beauty shine through. Your wedding day is one of the most special days of your life, so make it a work of art!
What are the drawbacks?
Having a custom gown made is not for everyone. It requires a certain degree of faith, flexibility, and open-mindedness. Faith, because you don’t get to try it on first, so you have to believe in the design you have envisioned and trust me to make it a reality. Flexibility, because designing a gown is an evolving process and we may have to make adjustments to the design along the way as we see what will work best to achieve the desired result. Open mindedness because if you have a very rigid idea of what you want, it may limit the creative potential. If you have a difficult time being decisive or are already under a lot of stress in planning your wedding, having a custom gown made may not be the best thing. Remember, it’s not worth stressing over the dress! Still interested? Read on!
Do you make replicas of designer wedding gowns?
No. As an artist, I enjoy creating original designs for unique wedding gowns, and do not copy other designers out of respect for their art. Not only that, but since it is nearly impossible to replicate a gown exactly, this would just set us both up for frustration. If you’ve fallen in love with another dress, my recommendation is to just buy that one! However, since visuals certainly help communicate the look you are going for, you are welcome to bring / send me photos of dresses you like to use as inspiration.
How much does a custom wedding gown cost?
That entirely depends on the dress. The type of materials used and the complexity of the design are the determining factors. I work in a variety of styles ranging from understated simplicity to decadently detailed elegance, and prices range from $1200 – $4000. Having a custom gown made may be more expensive than buying something off the rack because there is a lot of time involved in developing the design and pattern. However, it is well worth it to get exactly what you want. Also, all fittings and alterations are included, (a hidden cost when buying a dress off the rack). I do my best to work with each brides’ budget, so let me know what you have in mind!
How long does it take?
The timeframe depends upon your wedding date and availability for fittings. The process typically takes 5-6 months, depending on the number of fittings needed. However, I can sometimes expedite it, so if you’re a last minute bride, don’t hesitate to contact me.
What part do I play?
I see the process of designing a wedding gown it as a collaborative effort between myself and the bride, in which my job is to develop what the bride envisions into a reality. Your degree of involvement is up to you. Some brides have a very specific idea of what they want and send me photos or sketches, and I will guide them with suggestions as to what will work and the best materials to use, options for variations, etc. Other brides just have a general concept of what they want and I will work up several designs and send them several sketches from which to choose from or combine different elements. Either way, be prepared to be involved in the decision making process, because that, after all, is the whole point of having a custom made gown.
How do payments work?
The initial consultation is free. After we have agreed upon the design, materials, and budget, I require a 25% deposit (50% for long distance clients) that will cover the cost of materials before I begin working on the dress. The payment of the balance is not due until the dress is completed and everything is to your satisfaction.
What if I change my mind about what I want?
I have found that creating a bridal gown is a sort of evolutionary process, so I am fairly flexible to making changes to the design as we go along, and if they are minor I can usually do them at no extra charge. If it is a major change that requires purchasing additional fabric or redoing something, we may have to negotiate some additional charges in order to compensate me for extra time and materials.
Can I return the dress?
Because the dress is custom made for you, it is very important that you are fully committed to it before I begin. Once I have begun making your dress, I cannot accept returns or cancellations for any reason such as you changed your mind, found a cheaper dress somewhere else, called off the wedding, etc.
I understand how important a wedding gown is to a bride, and I am committed to making sure that you have a wonderful experience and LOVE your dress! If for any reason you are not satisfied with the finished dress, I am committed to working with you to remedy the issue. I believe that with patience and clear communication on both sides we can work together until you are 100% satisfied with your wedding gown.
